Job Description

The Engineer – E-Motor Controls is responsible for the specifications and programing of inverters and controls for electric motors in Business Unit Hybrid Modules in Schaeffler Group North America at the Wooster, Ohio facility. 

This position is responsible for the setup of e-motor controls, inverters, test plans and other test equipment of e-machines designed in Wooster. This includes requirements management in coordination with the program manager, development engineers, and design engineers. It also includes a close working relationship with external customers and the verification of the controls code and strategy. The tools for the system level checks are FMEA, functional safety analysis, benchmarking and assembly level tests.  The Engineer will perform motor control hardware and control algorithm design and simulation as well as perform characterization, tuning and calibration of e-machine systems on the dyno. 
The  Engineer – E-Motor Controls will work closely with the design and development groups within product development as well as engineers in other departments. This includes Development, Testing, Sales, Program Management and Production. The System Controls Engineer will also at times interact with customers and engineers from other Schaeffler facilities. This may involve travel of approximately 5% of the time. The System Controls Engineer is also expected to adhere to the core hours of 9am to 4pm while maintaining the minimum of 40 hours per week.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, have close visual acuity and  hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to maneuver objects, tools.   The employee is occasionally required to walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, bend, push, pull,  kneel, or  crouch.   The employee must regularly lift and move up to 10 pounds, occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 65 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
This position is required to know and understand the current specifications of the Quality Policy and procedures, as well as the Safety and Environment Policy and procedures and contribute to the achievement of the company objectives.  In addition to the duties listed above, the position holder must carry out tasks assigned by his supervisor that are essentially related to his duties.

Job Requirements

Formal prerequisites for the position:
- Knowledge of electromagnetic physics and its application
- Advanced understanding of power electronics hardware and motor control algorithms
- Experience in motor control implementation in DSP
- Experience in programming and development in Matlab/Simulink, C/C++, Python
- Solid understanding of various types of electric machines and their dynamic modeling
- Knowledge of CAN communication
- Working level understanding of functional safety
- Base understanding of hybrid drive concepts
- Knowledge of the Product Development Process
- Microsoft Office
- Communication ability (written & verbal)

- Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (MS or Ph.D. preferred)
